The Mercenary is a moderately long and hard level 30 quest.
Synopsis
Admiral Amerigo of the Almuji Army is attempting to assassinate a rogue commander of Nemract, Takan, who took over the Almuji barracks. Amerigo enlists the player's, Lanu's, Linton's, Aledar's, and Mel's help carry out his plan.
Stage 1
» Talk to the Scout in Detlas at [482, 70, -1585] or find one in another town.
Miliary Scouts can be found in the following towns:
- Military Scout: Ho, soldier! Soldier! Ahem...
- Military Scout: Admiral Amerigo of the Almuji Army requests the aid of able-bodied and unmoored soldiers from around the Province of Wynn.
- Military Scout: To put it bluntly... they've run into a predicament over there. Almuj's standing army has been taken captive, and the desert barracks overtaken.
- Military Scout: The Admiral has sent scouts round to gather any free-moving soldiers to help him... remedy the situation.
- Military Scout: ... If you ask me, I reckon he'd like this taken care of quietly and discreetly. I don't blame the man, really, given the circumstances.
- Military Scout: Anyhow, if you can, travel on over that way. Almuj is the desert city to the east of Detlas, if you've never seen it.
- Military Scout: With that, I'm off! There are many more soldiers to find. Good luck, if you choose to heed the summons!

Stage 2
» Talk to Amerigo in Almuj at [979, 85, -1971].
- Admiral Amerigo: Ugh, for crying out loud- I'm busy, can't you see that? I don't have time to...
- Admiral Amerigo: Ah. You're a soldier. Good, that's one more to add to the list. You met the scout, I'm sure.
- Admiral Amerigo: Not as many of you lot as I would have hoped for, but it'll have to do. Come down here, the others are in the briefing room already.
Go into the area downstairs Admiral Amerigo's room. In it is Lanu, Linton, Admiral Amerigo himself, Aledar, and Mel. Start the meeting to progress.

File:Aledar(TheMercenary).png
- Admiral Amerigo: Hmph. I suppose this is as many soldiers as we'll be able to get. Very well!
- Admiral Amerigo: To begin with - the situation. Commander Takan of Nemract has abandoned his post, and has taken the lead of a group of local bandits.
- Admiral Amerigo: Under his command, they were able to strike our forces in the dead of night, and have taken over the barracks to the northeast.
- Admiral Amerigo: Our entire military force, captured or killed! What a disgrace. We've sent messengers to Detlas, and they have promised their support...
- Admiral Amerigo: But I would like this dealt with quickly and quietly. That's where you five come in.
- Admiral Amerigo: You will attack and infiltrate the barracks, and assassinate our treasonous commander. I will leave the strategizing to you, as there is much I still must handle here.
- Lanu: A question, if I may. Do we know the commander's reasoning for this attack? It seems out of character.
- Admiral Amerigo: ...No. There is nothing that I can recall that would motivate such an attack. Will that be all?
- Lanu: ...I suppose.
- Admiral Amerigo: Then I must be off! Good luck, soldiers. I hope for a swift end to this disaster.
Amerigo will then exit the room.
- Mel: ...Well, darn. Bandits sound like trouble. Do we know what sort?
- Linton: Does it matter? We'll probably be fighting them no matter what kind they are.
- Lanu: It might, actually... Some bandit groups are stronger than others. If we know which group we're dealing with ahead of time, it might-
- Aledar: We've been standing around here for too long. Come on, let's make our way closer to the barracks. We can come up with a plan there.
- Lanu: Not a bad idea.
- Linton: Fine by me!
- Mel: Suppose that works.
Aledar and the others will leave the room. Leave as well to progress.
- Looks like the others have gone ahead. You should rendezvous with them closer to the barracks.
Stage 3
» Rendezvous near the barracks at [1371, 95, -2152].

File:Aledar(TheMercenary).png
- Mel: Well, darn. The place is swarming with bandits...
- Linton: I don't see how that's a problem! We can just launch explosives into the crowd, and boom, problem solved.
- Aledar: ...What?
- Lanu: We can't do that. You'd almost certainly damage the structure in the process!
- Linton: Ah, true. Can't forget about the historical value. Good catch.
- Aledar: ...Right. Well, anyway, I don't think we can get through those bandits with brute force. We'll have to try to find a way around them...
- Mel: Well, if I may interject- I reckon I won't be of much use in proper combat! Injured leg, 'n all. Makes moving a little hard!
- Mel: So, if we think goin' right in won't work, I could try to create a distraction? I've got the magic for it, and I'd be of much more use out here.
- Lanu: It could work... if I join you, we'd be able to draw attention towards us while the others sneak in from a different angle.
- Aledar: Good idea. But, how do we get in? I don't think there is another entrance, other than that one in front.
- Linton: Ahem. If you'll allow me-
- Aledar: This had better not be going where I think it is, Linton.
- Linton: Okay, maybe it is. But, listen! We don't have any entrances, right? What if we made our own... by blowing a hole through a wall?
- Aledar: ...Alright, fine. That sounds like it could work.
- Lanu: ...Didn't we just say we wouldn't-
- Linton: Exactly! You need to have more faith in the experts, Aledar.
- Mel: We all need to make sacrifices, Lanu.
- Aledar: Hm. No, I don't think I do. Either way, that sounds like a plan. <playername>, Linton, and I will break into the barracks then.
- Mel: And Lanu and I can distract 'em while you do so. Sounds like a plan! Let's get goin'.
Stage 4
» Storm the barracks at [1348, 78, -2267].
Several Shadow Spears Bandits can be spotted at the Invaded Barracks.
Talk to Linton to continue.
File:Linton(InvadedBarracks).pngFile:Aledar(InvadedBarracks).png
- Linton: Well, well. This looks like a good place to break our way in, wouldn't you say, Aledar?
- Aledar: Yes, Linton, it looks fine. <playername>, we'll be looking for Takan. I think the two of us could take him out.
- Linton: And I'll be looking for the captured soldiers! I stole a map of the barracks from Amerigo's desk, so I'll be able to find them easily enough!
- Aledar: You-... nevermind, I don't care. Just do your job, please?
- Linton: On it, boss!
Linton will then set off an explosive.
- Linton: See you two on the other side!
Linton will then walk into the barracks.
- Aledar: Alright, let's get to work!
Stage 5
» Continue through the barracks.
Throughout the barracks will be several Shadow Spears bandits. Some Shadow Spears Thrashers will ambush the player from the walls.
- Takan: Damn it... damn it, damn it, damn it ALL! Couldn't give me a MOMENT of peace, could he, that rat Amerigo...
The player and Aledar will finally reach the room where Takan is, speaking to a crowd of Shadow Spears Bandits.
- Takan: ...do I really need to do everything myself?! It's almost as though-
- Takan: Oh, I see. I see what's going on. More of Amerigo's dogs, here to take care of his business, huh?! Get out here where I can see you.
Aledar will then walk into the room with Takan and all of the Shadow Spears Bandits.
- Takan: You look new... haven't been around long enough to really see the face of War up close and personal yet, have you?
- Takan: You think this is right? You think it's right that those DAMNED admirals get all the wealth and fame, when WE'RE the ones out fighting in the trenches?!
- Takan: I've seen soldiers fall and fall and fall, then rise back up again. I've lived through the chaos and death of battle more times than I could count.
- Takan: And these IDIOTS think they deserve their power? Their authority?!
- Aledar: ...You've killed dozens, and you're keeping dozens more captured.
- Takan: And I'd do all that and more, just to prove my point! They think they hold power?! I'll show them power...
- Takan: I suppose I'll start with you. What are two more compared to dozens?
- Takan: Step aside, Shadow Spears. I'd like to deal with these dogs myself.
All of the Shadow Spears Bandits will then leave the room.
- Aledar: ...We won't make it easy for you.
Stage 6
» Defeat Takan.
Takan will turn into a hostile boss.

- Takan: Y-you won't-... Stay back!
Takan will then flee to a hidden room.
- Aledar: Damn it, he's getting away!
- Aledar: This tower can only go up... Come on, we need to chase after him! We can't let him get away!
Stage 7
» Continue up the stairs in the barracks.
After going up the stairs, the Shadow Spears Leader can be spotted in a room.
- Shadow Spears Leader: ...
- Shadow Spears Leader: No need to be hasty.
- Shadow Spears Leader: Look, it's obvious we've lost here. Even if that idiot escapes, you military folk will find him.
- Shadow Spears Leader: So, I surrender! Don't see the point in fightin' a pointless battle. Not like we're gonna be paid after this mess, anyhow.
The Shadow Spears Leader will then walk to a desk that has a key on it.
- Shadow Spears Leader: Here, take the key to the tower. A sign of good faith. Do what you will with him, I really don't care.
- Shadow Spears Leader: I always preferred his brother anyway. Much quieter.
The Shadow Spears Leader will jump out of the barracks and flee.
After grabbing the key, a Shadow Spears Slicer and a Shadow Spears Thrasher will appear, but they aren't necessary to defeat. Use the key on the door.
File:Aledar(InvadedBarracks).png
- Aledar: Ugh, more bandits... I'll hold them off here.
- Aledar: Keep going after Takan! I'll be fine!
Stage 8
» Head up the tower and take out Takan.
The tower is a parkour section. Takan will speak throughout.
- Takan: Urgh... Why did I even come up here?! There's nowhere for me to-
At the top of the tower is Takan.
- Takan: ...Oh. L-listen. We can talk this out-

- Takan is dead. You should regroup with the others outside the barracks.
Stage 9
» Regroup with your companions at [1374, 84, -2179].
File:Aledar(TheMercenary).png
- Linton: ...and so then, I had to free them somehow! So I shouted at them to brace for it, and-
- Aledar: <playername>! There you are! I'm glad you made it out safely. It looks like the bandits are dispersing.
- Linton: And so is my train of thought for my story. So! Did you get him?
- [1] He's dead. I have his badge.
- Lanu: That's good to hear. At least something good came of this whole situation...
- Aledar: I'm glad we managed to take him out after all. The things he was saying... he seemed like a dangerous man.
- Mel: Oh, not this again. You're still on that?
- Mel: I caught a few of the things he was shoutin' from outside. It didn't sound very pleasant.
- Lanu: Some of us care about history, Mel.
- Linton: Well, I didn't hear a thing. Probably on account of the ringing in my ears. It seems to me we're done here, though, right?
- Lanu: It looks like it, yes. I think I'll stay behind to help the soldiers clear out the remaining bandits.
- Mel: I figure I'll stick around too. Don't got anythin' better to do right now, anyway!
- Linton: Well, I'm out of here. I've got places to be! Things to do! Explosives to return! Goodbye!
- Aledar: <playername>, I guess that leaves the two of us to return to Almuj with the news! Let's get going.
Stage 10
» Bring Takan's badge to Amerigo at [978, 86, -1973].
File:Aledar(TheMercenary).png
- Admiral Amerigo: Soldiers! Report! Don't tell me you're the only two survivors, damn it all...
- Aledar: No, sir, the mission was a success. Takan is dead.
- Admiral Amerigo: You're certain of this? You have his badge, surely...?
- [-1 Takan's Badge]
- Admiral Amerigo: I see... satisfactory work, soldiers. You two, and the others, have Almuj's gratitude.
- Aledar: Admiral, sir. Some of what Takan is saying, it was-
- Admiral Amerigo: I wouldn't put too much stock in those traitor's words. People like him, who spit vitriol with no merit, riling up the masses against the order we hold.
- Admiral Amerigo: He is an angry man holding a grudge for an imagined wrongdoing. There is nothing more to it than that. I would suggest putting it out of your mind.
- Admiral Amerigo: You will all be well-compensated for your work today. Now, run along. I have to collect my honorary badge for taking out Ex-Commander Takan.
Epilogue
Admiral Amerigo will walk out of his office.
File:Aledar(TheMercenary).png
- Aledar: ...
- Aledar: I'm starting to see why Takan hated him so much.
- Aledar: I'll... probably try to speak to Admiral Aegis about that the next time I'm in Detlas.
- Aledar: Anyway! What an adventure, right? I can't wait to tell Tasim about it.
- Did Recover the Past:
- Aledar: ...Speaking of. Have you heard from him recently? I can't seem to get ahold of him at all.
- Aledar: It's weird. Last I heard, he was at Elkurn, but he's not there anymore.
- [1] He went off to Gavel, I think.
- Aledar: He- what? Really? And he didn't even tell me...
- Aledar: ...I guess it must have slipped his mind. That's alright. We're all busy around here, right?
- Aledar: A general location is useful, though. I'll see if I can get any letters to him. Thanks for telling me.
- [2] I... haven't heard from him either.
- Aledar: Yeah, that makes two of us...
- Aledar: Well, it's probably fine. I'm sure he'll pop up eventually! We just need to wait.
- Aledar: I wonder where he's gone off to? Some kind of assignment in Troms, maybe? Or could he have gone off to Gavel...?
- Aledar: Well, whatever. It was good to see you again! Even if... well. Even if it was strange.
- Aledar: I'll see you around, <playername>.
- Didn't do Recover the Past:
- Aledar: Well, I guess I'm going to head off. I'll see you around, <playername>!
Aledar will walk out of Amerigo's office.
