This Boss Altar is located in the Kander Forest, on top of a hill south of the Lexdale Penitentiary.

Items

The items needed for this altar are 5 Werewolf Tails right clicked on the altar within the dark circle. You can obtain Werewolf Tails by killing the Werewolves that spawn in the forest.

Boss

  • Blade of Shade: Aha...you'll be a very interesting quarry to catch, human...

The fight consists of simply a melee boss, Blade of Shade. After defeating the first phase, the boss splits into two copies. Each copy will successively split into more copies until eventually being defeated permanently, up to a maximum of 16 copies. They have 15000 health in the first phase, with each successive phase having higher health - the final phase (16 copies) has 91,750 health each, with all clones of the Blade of Shade having a total HP of 2,446,500. This means that attempting to pick off one set at at time is very difficult, since the earlier phases tend to split even when focusing on the later phases. The player should keep their distance, as this horde can easily overwhelm them, especially since the boss often casts Teleport and Vanish. The last clones will drop the various altar rewards and a portion of the emerald rewards.

Trivia

  • The Challenge of the Blades boss altar slipped by 1.20's rework of Kander Forest's lore and builds, and despite the discovery lore referring to the Blade of Shade as a denizen of "the Realm of Darkness", this does not refer to Dern, but to the world from which is Naragath summoned in the now-removed quest Eye of the Storm.
  • The tribute of Werewolf Tails is meant to show that the player is a hunter, akin to the Blade of Shade.
  • Blade of Shade wields a Crimson Dagger, a custom weapon skin.
  • This altar was revamped in Hotfix #4 of Version 2.0.4.
    • Blade of Shade, alongside Night Lurkers and Shade Lurkers in the Dark Forest and Kander Forest, were given new appearances to dispel the long-standing misconception that they were Werewolves.
