Project Description

This is the first of a set of projects I hope to initiate on this wiki. The wiki has reached a point where most Wynncraft content has designated pages but many of the pages are not standardized, lack important information or have spelling or grammar issues. This particular project hopes to standardize the Locations category into a set of subcategories, information requirements per location, and set a new standard for "good pages" on the wiki. Feel free to contribute following guidelines on this page. --Snickers10m (talk) 02:34, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Note: Even this page is incomplete. The idea behind this project page is to make an area where many contributors can collaborate to form the Locations category. The current stuff below is stuff I made to get it started, but from now on it should all be discussed so we can all agree on standardization techniques.

To-do / Sub-Projects

Page Maintenance

Description

Ultimately one of the most important parts of any category, Page Maintenance responsibility includes:

  • Spelling, Grammar, and Conventions checks of existing pages
  • Validation checks of already organized data, ensuring information is up-to-date
  • Validation checks of page names and location names, ensuring they are referred to in a given or standardized way
  • Correcting minor format errors such as image size, unreadable text, etc.
Progress

This project does not contribute to the overall project progress percentage because it is an ongoing page requirement.

Categorization

Description

There are many locations in Wynncraft, and since some are more important than others, they need to be categorized as such. Categorization responsibility includes:

  • Tagging pages with applicable categories to keep the wiki organized
  • Creating main pages for each category (e.g. a City page for the City category) which describes the category and lists the pages (or just important pages) currently part of it
  • Applying the correct category icon (part of the Town2 Infobox) to the page's content

Categorization Scheme:

Locations may have more than one category! When a location is one of the following categories, list that category as well as the others that are parents to that category. For example, an Island would be part of the Island, Area, and Locations category. A Site is part of the Site and Locations category.

The current proposed categories for the field of locations are:

  • Locations - The overbearing category for all below
  • Territory - A large zone, like a country. Should include provinces and dimensions (e.g. Province of Wynn, Nether)
  • Region - A medium zone without significant settlements or structures, or encompassing many small settlements or structures (e.g. Desert of Almuj, Nesaak Forest)
  • Area - Two options: Any labeled location on the rendered map, or an area that is a significant scene (e.g. Nivla Woods, but also Nether Portal and Volcanic Island, even though they aren't named on the map)
  • City - Subcategory of Area; a large collection of buildings and structures, usually contains several merchants, NPCs, a wall, and gates. A town is populated by villagers. Usually a large white bolded label on the rendered map (e.g. Ragni, Selchar, but not Ice Islands or Ternaves)
  • Town - Subcategory of Area; a small collection of residence buildings and structures, usually contains at least one merchant or NPC. A town is populated by villagers. A town should be a collection of citizens rather than a large business site (e.g. Maltic, Elkurn, Katoa Ranch)
  • Structure - Subcategory of Area; one or a few structures that do not serve residence to a large collection of unrelated citizens. Usually any settlement-type area that does not fit into City, Town, or Island, or an actual utility structure (e.g. Katoa Ranch, The Tower of Amnesia, House of Twain, Ancient Nemract)
  • Path - Subcategory of Area; an area that serves mainly as a connection for other areas, regardless of the presence of Merchants or NPCs (e.g. Emerald Trail, The Great Bridge)
  • Natural - Subcategory of Area; sort of the "junk-drawer", many kinds of areas can fit into this category. A Natural Area is usually characterized by a significant natural feature such as a river, mountains, etc. (e.g. Pigmen's Ravines, Nivla Woods, Pirate Bay)
  • Island - Subcategory of Area; two options: an island with a small or medium Structure, small or medium Natural, or very insignificant Town on it, or a collective area of many islands. All other island areas should be placed in the next best category (e.g. Zhight Island, The Bear Zoo, Mage Island, but not Selchar or Pirate Town; Ice Islands and Volcanic Island should be included, but Maro Peaks should be a Natural)
  • Dungeons - Subcategory of Area; only leveled dungeons should be included - ones marked with a cobweb on the rendered map (e.g. Spider Dungeon but not Mummy's Tomb)
  • Site - These areas are not marked on the map but are somewhat significant in some way. They are very small and usually are grind areas sometimes marked with a name (e.g. Witch Hut, Ragni Sewers, Nivla Village, Creeper's Hideout, Pigman Cave)

Infoboxing

Description

If you know how to use those pesky infoboxes and tables and read their documentation, you should contribute to this category. Infoboxing responsibility includes:

  • Entering information and an appropriate picture into the main infobox for a location
  • Placing sub-infoboxes or tables where appropriate, such as NPC locations or merchant merchandise data
  • Removing incorrectly used, inapplicable, uninformative, or cluttered or spammed infoboxes and tables from pages

Note: New infoboxes should be collaborated between multiple contributors for the best results. Some needed infoboxes are:

  • Merchant merchandise
the Leaf Armour Merchant has a nice trade table. I'll try to make a template out of that --Adrenalynnn (talk) 17:54, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I noticed that and thought it looked really good. If you were to make a template (And then possibly teach me how to insert them) I can help make sure they are put on every merchant page. We could really do with an Admin or Wiki staff member to help make sure what is happening is okay with them. Lets go bother Abyssal who is listed as head admin --AKTheKnight (talk) 18:16, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
created Template:Tradebox but please do not use it yet! Wait a few days for others to see and check it. Could still use some visual improvements. See Leaf Armour Merchant for a demonstration --Adrenalynnn (talk) 03:59, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Details
  • The Town2 Infobox should be used for locations modified by this project. Visit its page for documentation.
  • Icons for the various categories of location will need to be made and integrated into Town2 ASAP. snickers10m is working on this.

Content

Description

This is everything the readers will be reading in sentence form, the images they'll view, and any other details and sections. Currently this sub-project is on HALT until a group of contributors can collaborate and create a standardized Location Page with the requirements of information for each type of location. Until then, Content responsibility includes:

  • Join the Page Maintenance sub-project?
  • Create new pages based on other related pages
Progress

This sub-project is constantly expanding as new content is added to Wynncraft and new pages are requested.

Page Maintenance

Categorization

  • while editing islands i noted that we will fade out the previously used category Ocean. Just asking if that is on purpose --Adrenalynnn (talk) 04:39, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
Yep markin' that for deletion. --Snickers10m (talk) 01:42, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Infoboxing

Content

  • Layout/Template
to improve page look we should use a standard layout/template for the content, too. Best would be different templates based on the category of the page. Maybe one for cities/towns (including NPC, merchants...), one for dungeons (mobs, boss) and one for all other categories. Any ideas and opinions are highly welcome --Adrenalynnn (talk) 04:39, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
Imho we should use one layout template for cities/town (low prio, since those pages already look good) and another one for all the small structures and sites. Especially the small sites will maybe never get much content - just use a basic layout like NPCs, Trivia paragraphs for them? --Adrenalynnn (talk) 16:42, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
I think the Trivia paras are good as they make the page more interesting. A similar (if not identical) layout is great as it makes finding info easy, e.g. I know co-ords can be found on the right hand side infobox --AKTheKnight (talk) 16:50, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Suggestions

  • Whilst levelling up and using the Wiki I realised many of the co-ordinates are off by 5-10 blocks, are they done that way for a certain way? I will be fixing any that I find over ~20 blocks off. --AKTheKnight (talk) 16:45, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
this is a project (aka internal) page, no need for the nowiki tag so i removed those. Most contributors probably just use F3 and write down the coordinates from where they're taking the screenshot (that includes me). So about 5 blocks off would be normal and expected. Any deviation larger than that should be corrected. Thanks for you contributions on that! --Adrenalynnn (talk) 16:55, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
Ok thanks, I'm new to editing wikis so thanks! --AKTheKnight (talk) 17:04, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I was thinking maybe for each location, or even like npc location (for quests) we could add a screenshot of the general location from map.wynncraft.com and edit the image up to reflect where each location is.
However, it could take away from the fun of the game. I'm not sure, but maybe some people like using coordinates to get there? But having this you could see, for example, where in Detlas one of the quest NPCs are.
I was also thinking that for Detlas and other cities we take a screenshot of the whole place and use it as a reference if that makes sense. --Colin350 (Talk) 12:37, 26 May 2016 (EST)
If you can get that idea to work, Colin, I think it would make a great addition. A large screenshot, with at least quest NPCs noted on it, would be helpful to everyone. --Moe_Ronickah (Talk) 11:07, 02 June 2016 (EST)
Detlas and a few others have been updated to fit this. To be clear, the file had to be small enough to be uploaded and big enough to fit all npcs, which they do, but part of the locations are cut off which is unfortunate --Colin350 (Talk) 16:25, 02 June 2016 (EST)
